Vaux-le-Vicomte: the castle that inspired Versailles
Vaux-le-Vicomte is a 17th-century masterpiece built by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister. The 1661 inauguration was so sumptuous that the jealous king had Fouquet imprisoned and hired his architects to build Versailles.
Today, this privately owned castle offers a more intimate experience than Versailles. Le Nôtre's gardens span 33 hectares with spectacular perspectives. The candlelight evenings (2,000 candles illuminating the castle and gardens) are considered one of the most beautiful night shows in the Île-de-France region.
