Omaha Beach in Normandy

The D-Day Circuit in One Day

The classic circuit starts at the Caen Memorial (opens 9 AM), continues to Pointe du Hoc, then Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Allow 3 hours' driving from Paris to Caen, then sites are 30-45 minutes apart.

With a private chauffeur, you can optimise the route to your interests. History enthusiasts may want to add Arromanches (D-Day Museum) and Pegasus Bridge at Bénouville.

Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery

Omaha Beach is the most iconic D-Day site. On June 6, 1944, American troops suffered the heaviest losses here. The 8 km beach is peaceful today, but bunker remnants recall the intensity of the fighting.

The American Cemetery overlooking the beach holds 9,387 graves perfectly aligned facing the sea. The visitor centre traces the personal stories of several soldiers. Allow at least 1.5 hours for this moving site.

Bayeux and Its Tapestry

Just 30 minutes from Omaha Beach, Bayeux was the first French town liberated (June 7, 1944). Its famous 70-metre tapestry tells the story of William the Conqueror's invasion of England in 1066 — a unique treasure.

Bayeux's medieval old town, miraculously spared from bombing, provides a charming setting for lunch. Restaurants around the cathedral serve excellent Norman cuisine.

Practical Tips

Leave Paris before 7 AM to reach the Caen Memorial at opening. Pack warm clothes even in summer — wind on the Normandy beaches is constant. Walking shoes are essential for Pointe du Hoc.

In a V-Class, the 3-hour journey flies by with WiFi, comfortable seats, and air conditioning. Your chauffeur can comment on historical sites en route and adapt the circuit to your pace. Return to Paris around 8-9 PM.
