Chartres Cathedral: 800 years of light
Notre-Dame de Chartres Cathedral is considered the pinnacle of French Gothic art. Built in a record 26 years (1194-1220) after the Romanesque cathedral burned, it holds the world's largest surface of medieval stained glass: 2,600 m² across 176 windows. The famous 'Chartres blue', whose manufacturing secret is lost, gives the interior an otherworldly light.
Beyond the cathedral, Chartres offers a charming medieval center with half-timbered houses, covered bridges along the Eure river and the International Stained Glass Centre. The 'Chartres en Lumières' show (April-October, free) projects luminous frescoes onto the cathedral and 24 monuments — a must-see in the evening.
