RER C: The Classic Option

The RER C (direction Versailles Château Rive Gauche) is the most popular route: €4.35, about 40 minutes from central Paris. Versailles Château station is a 10-minute walk from the estate entrance.

Beware: Line C frequently has weekend engineering works. Check disruptions on the Transilien website before departing. Trains get packed on Saturday mornings — leave before 9 AM or after 10:30 AM.

Buses and Shuttles

Bus 171 from Pont de Sèvres (Metro 9) serves Versailles in 30 minutes for a metro ticket price. It's a good alternative when the RER C has engineering works.

Tourist shuttles (Versailles Express) depart from the Eiffel Tower and cost about €35 return, including palace entry ticket. Handy but with fixed schedules and limited flexibility.

Private Car: Ultimate Comfort

In a V-Class with chauffeur, the Paris-Versailles journey takes 35-50 minutes depending on traffic. Your chauffeur drops you directly at Place d'Armes, in front of the palace gates — no walking, no connections.

The key advantage: flexibility. Visit the palace in the morning, lunch in the Saint-Louis quarter, then explore Marie-Antoinette's Hamlet or the Grand Trianon in the afternoon. Your chauffeur adapts to your pace.

Tickets and Palace Tips

Buy tickets online in advance from the official website — the walk-up queue can exceed 2 hours in peak season. The 'Passport' ticket (€21) covers the entire estate including gardens and Musical Fountains shows.

First Sundays from November to March offer free entry — but expect record crowds. Tuesdays are the quietest days. The palace is closed on Mondays.

Our Recommendation by Traveller Type

Solo traveller or couple without luggage: RER C is perfect. Family with children or pushchair: private transfer is infinitely more comfortable. Group of 4-7: the V-Class costs less than buying 4-7 tourist shuttle tickets.

If combining Versailles with another excursion (Giverny, Chartres), a chauffeur-driven day hire is the ideal solution. Contact us for a bespoke quote.
