Victor Hugo nicknamed Rouen 'the city of a hundred spires' and the title still fits. Notre-Dame Cathedral, immortalized by Monet in his series of 30 paintings, towers over a remarkably preserved medieval center. The Gros-Horloge, a Renaissance astronomical clock spanning a pedestrian street, is the city's emblem.
Rouen is also the city of Gustave Flaubert (born here in 1821, his birthplace is open for visits) and of Joan of Arc, burned at the Old Market Square in 1431. The Church of Saint Joan of Arc, built on the pyre site with bold modern architecture, houses magnificent 16th-century stained glass from a nearby church destroyed during the war.
