Rambouillet: the presidents' secret residence
Rambouillet Castle has been a seat of power since the 14th century. François I died here in 1547, Louis XVI established a sheepfold that still exists (Bergerie Nationale, open for visits), and Napoleon signed his final abdication here before Saint Helena. Since 1896, it's been the French President's official summer residence.
The Bergerie Nationale, founded by Louis XVI in 1786 to acclimatize Spanish merinos, is unique in France. Children love the farm animal discovery trail. Rambouillet Forest (22,000 ha) offers exceptional hiking, fishing ponds and the Espace Rambouillet (wildlife park with deer and birds of prey).
