Honfleur: Normandy's most beautiful harbor
Honfleur is a preserved miracle: while most Norman ports were destroyed in 1944, Honfleur was spared from bombing. The Vieux Bassin, surrounded by 16th and 17th-century half-timbered slate-covered houses, is the very image of picturesque Normandy.
It was in Honfleur that Eugène Boudin introduced young Claude Monet to plein-air painting, giving birth to the Impressionist movement. The Church of Saint Catherine, entirely built from wood by ship carpenters in the 15th century, is unique in France. Salt granaries, art galleries and seafood restaurants complete the picture.
