Meaux: Great War memory and the king of cheeses
Meaux houses the Great War Museum, Europe's largest museum devoted to World War I. Across 3,000 m², with 70,000 objects and life-size trench reconstructions, it tells the story of the conflict in an immersive and moving way. It was here, on the banks of the Marne, that the First Battle of the Marne halted the German advance in September 1914.
Meaux is also home to Brie de Meaux AOP, the soft cheese crowned 'king of cheeses' by Talleyrand at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Saint-Étienne Cathedral (12th-16th century) and the Bossuet Garden (honoring the Bishop of Meaux) complete the visit. At 35 min from CDG, it's the quickest cultural excursion from the airport.
