Saint-Germain-en-Laye: the royal town at Paris's doorstep

Saint-Germain-en-Laye is one of the most elegant towns in the Île-de-France region. Its castle, built by François I and expanded by Henri IV, was the main residence of French kings before Versailles. Louis XIV was born here in 1638 and lived until age 44.

Today, the castle houses the National Archaeology Museum, with collections from Prehistory to the Merovingians — including the Lady of Brassempouy, the oldest known representation of a human face (25,000 years old). The Grande Terrasse, designed by Le Nôtre over 2.4 km, offers a spectacular panorama of Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the Seine.
